Transformation of Engineering Education at Olin College

Invited lecture by Dr. Rebecca Christianson at the conference Engineering Education

Dr. Rebecca Christianson from Olin College of Engineering, Needham, USA, will hold an invited lecture on "Transformation of Engineering Education at Olin College" at the conference Engineering Education /EE on Tuesday, May 21, within MIPRO 2019.
This keynote speaker is partially supported by the IEEE Education Society Distinguished Lecturer Program.

In various reports on trends in worldwide engineering education change, Olin college of Engineering is cited as a good example. Although „old“, esteemed, large, public, universities claim Olin is too different from them to be copied, they are carefully watching development at Olin in order to use the experience in their own change. Some of them, like Purdue Polytechnic Institute, hire Olin's professors to consult them in their change process.
This lecture will give a useful and practical insight in the processes at Olin, answering questions like:

•    Why is Olin changing anything at all?
•    What is the main goal of that change?
•    What is the main method of change?
•    Who has designed the change?
•    How are change results measured?
•    What are the main obstacles?
•    What are the main prerequisites?

Dr. Rebecca Christianson is an Associate Professor of Applied Physics at Olin College of Engineering.  Olin College is a young, undergraduate only engineering college with a focus on hands on, project-based learning.  Prof. Christianson has taught there for fifteen years with a specialty in interdisciplinary classes which integrate mathematics, physics and engineering. Her research is in condensed matter physics including work in active matter, low dimensional magnetic materials and most recently, microfluidics. She earned her PhD in Physics from MIT, and did her postdoctoral work at Harvard University.
