On Thursday, February 11, the European University Sports Association (EUSA), the umbrella organization of academic sports in Europe, held its EUSA Awards Ceremony online, recognising and celebrating the achievements and contributions of individuals, universities and associations in European university sport. 

The awards were given in several categories, and the successes that the students of the University of Zagreb achieved at the European University Championships provided them with two great recognitions.

Based on the EUSA decision, both awards given to universities this year went to the University of Zagreb - the Best University award and the Most Active University award.

In addition to the University of Zagreb, the finalists for winning the award were the University of Malaga (Spain) and the University of Aydin in Istanbul (Turkey).

The appearance of the sports representatives of the University of Zagreb at thirteen university championships in 2019, provided them the second recognition, i.e. the one for the most active sports university, which they won in the competition of finalists - University of Porto and Minho University (Portugal).

"It took a lot of work, sweat and sacrifice to defend the colors of our University of Zagreb across Europe in the middle of the summer exams, and for that, our dear students, thank you a hundred times. (…) We hope that these results will be an incentive to finally build a sports and recreational student center in Zagreb with the support and cooperation of partners, so that students and young people have adequate conditions for achieving top results in order to promote Croatia on the international stage. The lack of infrastructure in the City of Zagreb is currently the biggest problem for athletes and we hope that we will be able to solve it by adequate investment in youth and student standards. " - they said in a statement from the Zagreb University Sports Association.

In addition to these two categories, EUSA also awarded prizes for the most active national university sports federation (German University Sports Federation - ADH), the most successful national university sports federation (French University Sports Federation - FFSU) and the fair-play award (Technion Israel Institute of Technology - ISR) , and after the announcement of the winners from each category, the rectors and presidents of the awarded institutions addressed the ceremony virtually.
