Matjaž Gams - keynote lecturer at the formal opening of MIPRO 2025

Superintelligence is Coming – How to Upgrade Our Societies NOW?

Matjaž Gams
Head of the Department of Intelligent Systems at Institut Jozef Stefan, Ljubljana, Slovenia

The rapid advancements in AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) suggest that superintelligence could become a reality within a few years. Drawing upon the visions of Ray Kurzweil, this lecture will present a forward-looking perspective on the emergence of a new human civilization shaped by AI. While current AI technologies already offer transformative potential, societal adaptation remains slow.

This presentation will provide an overview of key areas where AI is enabling significant upgrades – including education, bureaucracy, and healthcare – along with practical examples of ongoing implementations. As a case study, HomeDOCtor will be showcased – an AI-powered virtual doctor with an estimated IQ of 150, currently operating 24/7 in Slovenia.

Matjaž Gams serves as the Head of the Agent Group at the Jožef Stefan Institute. He also holds professorships in Computer Science at the University of Ljubljana, MPS, Alma Mater Europaea, and the University Novo Mesto in Slovenia. With teaching experience across 14 faculties in both Slovenia and Germany, his academic focus encompasses a diverse range of subjects including intelligent systems, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, e-health, superintelligence, and business intelligence.

Gams served in editorial roles for 12 scientific journals. He is the Executive Director of the long-standing Informatica journal and has been a key figure in the organizing committee of the IS Conference for nearly 25 years, where the prestigious Michie-Turing award is presented. Gams has also played a pivotal role in the publication of the Computer English-Slovene dictionary, which has been printed in over 50,000 copies.

On the national stage, Gams is a member of the National Engineering Academy and has been inducted into Slovenia's Hall of Fame for computer scientists. From 2017 to 2022, he served as a National Councilor for Science in the upper house of the Slovenian Parliament, contributing significantly to the advancement of contemporary scientific legislation. He is a municipal councilor and has held leadership positions in various professional unions, including the presidency of the research conference and vice-presidency of the SVIZ union with 40.000 members. He has or is representing Slovenia in several international organizations such as ACM, EurAI, and IFIP.
