The Present and Future of Open Science in Europe

MIPRO 2019 - Keynote lecture by Dr. Gergely Sipos

Dr. Gergely Sipos will hold a lecture on “The Present and Future of Open Science in Europe” at MIPRO 2019. This lecture, which represents the EOSC-Hub project, will show achievements and expected results.

EOSC-hub is a 33 million Euro H2020 project that started in January 2018 with the involvement of over 100 institutes. In three years the project will establish the first elements of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). It is an infrastructure which aims to accelerate and support the current transition to more effective Open Science and Open Innovation in the Digital Single Market in Europe.

Dr. Gergely Sipos, the keynote lecturer, works as a Customer and Technical Outreach Manager for the EGI Foundation in Amsterdam. He coordinates EGI’s engagement program and supports researcher communities and educators from academia and industry in tackling big-data and big-compute challenges using state of the art services. Since 2018 he is one of the drivers of the user engagement and support activities of the European Open Science Cloud initiative. Dr. Sipos holds an MSc and a PhD in computer science and project management from the University of Miskolc, Hungary. He became involved in grid computing in 2002 and researched high-level user environments and collaborative design tools.

Through the lecture, Dr. Sipos will clarify how the EOSC Hub is defined, created and managed by the advanced integration and management system. This Integration and Management System (the Hub) is based on the advanced processes, policies and tools of leading European e-Infrastructures to cover the entire service life-cycle of services from planning to final delivery. Through this service management system, software and data are delivered towards researchers via the EOSC Portal Marketplace. The Marketplace already includes nearly 60 services from 3 e-Infrastructure communities (EGI, EUDAT, INDIGO-DataCloud) and from over 20 research infrastructures and scientific service providers. The service catalogue is expected to radically grow in the next years. The Hub acts as a single contact point for researchers and innovators to discover, access, use, and reuse a wide range of services starting from baseline infrastructure services (such as HTC clusters, IaaS clouds, storage, security) to domain specific applications, including datasets on various portals.
